can we stop hating on hipsters yet?
I’m sure 84,000 other people have already said this, but randomly inserting “hipster” into headlines and catfood and shit has become beyond obnoxious. In my usual waltz around the feminist blogosphere, I stumbled on some blog posts on hipster racism and hipster ablism (the latter critiquing Glee for having an able-bodied actor play someone in a wheelchair). And I couldn’t help but think, Really?
How are hipster -isms any different from the regular ism? Racism sucks, regardless of whether the person making the comment is wearing skinny jeans. Everybody is racist (including myself, needless to say), so why do we need to focus on a “new” flavor or niche? Don’t remember “suburban dad racism,” “cowboy racism,” or “investment banker racism.”
I think what’s really going on is people love to hate on hipsters, and tacking on an -ism is another reason to. Sure, there are plenty of reasons to hate hipsters. Appropriating music or fashion that has deep cultural meaning, bleaching that out, and commodifying it is indeed troubling and worthy of criticism. But I can’t help but think it’s reminiscent of high school on a grand, whiny scale: “Those kids think they’re so cool, but really they’re…they’re…ugh!”
So media? If shoe-horning “hipster” into your headlines and articles is the only way you can make your content interesting or relevant, well. Maybe it isn’t.

preach, sister.
I love this post.
Hipster racism is what keeps the movement going. Once it becomes accepted and out of the headlines, it will fade away and become a dusty subculture (to resurface later). Then we’ll have to see what cycles back; and I hope its baggy clothes because then I can finally be on the cutting edge!!
I’m thinking it will be probably be tie dye though.
Plus, the goths and the emos had it way worse. Yet no one ever picks on the preppies. There’s the conspiracy!
